Along with delirium, this is a typical state of altered consciousness. There are no positive symptoms such as visual or auditory hallucinations, and consciousness is only slightly clouded, but there is a significant narrowing of the field of consciousness. As a result, although it is possible to recognize the outside world to a certain extent, there are misperceptions and illusions. In particular, since the outside world cannot be broadly and appropriately grasped, behavior is inappropriate for the situation. There is anxiety, fear, and excitement, and a sense of victimization and anger can lead to impulsive violence. The flow of consciousness is suddenly interrupted, leading to a different consciousness, and then the original consciousness is suddenly restored in a discontinuous manner, so that in the dazed state the patient becomes a different person, and when they recover, they are left with amnesia for the time in between.

譫妄（せんもう）と並ぶ意識変容の代表的な状態である。幻視，幻聴などの陽性症状はなく，意識混濁も軽いが，意識野の著しい狭窄がある。このため，外界の認知はある程度可能であるが，誤認や錯覚がある。とくに外界を広く適切に把握することができないため，状況にそぐわない行動となる。不安や恐怖，興奮があり，被害感や怒りから，衝動的な暴行を示すことがある。意識の流れが突然断たれて別の意識となり，また急にもとの意識へと非連続的に回復するので，朦朧状態では別の人格になっており，回復するとその間の健忘を残す。
