A general term for insects belonging to the Dipteran order, family Agromyzidae. They are so named because their larvae live by burrowing into the leaves, stems, and roots of plants. Adults are small flies, generally black or dark brown, with a body length of 2-5 mm. The female's ovipositor protrudes in a cone shape and penetrates plant tissue to lay eggs. The hatched larvae damage plants using a unique burrowing method for each species. When they burrow into leaves, unique feeding marks can be seen on the leaf surface, such as linear, shapeless, or linear but pouch-shaped, and the species can often be identified by their shape as well.

双翅目ハモグリバエ科Agromyzidaeに属する昆虫の総称。幼虫が植物の葉，茎，根などに潜入して生活するのでこのように呼ばれる。成虫は，体長2～5mm，一般に黒色または黒褐色の小型のハエで，雌の産卵管は円錐状に突出し，それを植物の組織に穿入して産卵する。孵化（ふか）した幼虫は，種ごとに独特の潜孔方法で植物を食害する。葉に潜入した場合，食痕は線状のもの，形の不定なもの，最初線状であったものが袋状になるものなど葉の表面に独特の食痕の形が見られ，この形でも種の同定ができる場合が多い。
