1492‐1550 Italian jurist known as the founder of humanistic jurisprudence. Born into a prominent Milanese family, he studied classical languages and philological techniques under the humanist Parrasio. He studied law at the universities of Pavia and Bologna, and opened a practice in Milan in 1516. During this time, he had already published works such as Notes on the Last Three Books of the Corpus Edictus (1515) and Paradoxes of the Roman Law (1518), which harshly criticized traditional scholastic jurisprudence by using philological and historical methods. He was invited to teach at the universities of Avignon and Bourges (1529-33), where he gained European fame for his attempts at a new humanistic jurisprudence.
