…In this play, which begins with a conversation between an English couple in an English middle-class family, language breaks down from its everyday meaning and undergoes nuclear fission, even destroying the identity of the person speaking it. While Ionesco's play was initially poorly received by audiences, Irish-born S. Beckett's En attendant Godot (1953) has, in contrast, been performed more than 300 times in Paris alone and in countries around the world, becoming one of the most influential works in modern theater. The two main characters, Vladimir and Estragon, who are simply waiting for a character named Godot in an empty world with only one dead tree, represent the extremes of the human condition, and humans who are thrown into this infinite emptiness must simply keep talking to escape from their hellish loneliness. …
