St. Gall Abbey - St. Gallen Abbey

St. Gall Abbey - St. Gallen Abbey
It began as a monastery built in 613 in the Swiss mountains (present-day St. Gallen) by Gallus (?-627), who accompanied the Irish missionary Columbanus. In 720, the Alamanni Otmar (c. 689-759) established it as a monastery, which soon converted to the Benedictine Order. In 759 it became subordinate to the Bishopric of Constance, but in 816 it gained independence when the king granted it the privilege of inmunitation, and it became an imperial monastery. Construction of the monastery's facilities began around this time, and the monastery plan, which was used as a reference during this construction and is still preserved in the monastery's library, is thought to have been created and sent by the nearby Reichenau Monastery, and conveys an ideal image of medieval monastic architecture (see the entry on Monastery: Monastic Architecture).
