This settlement site was located in Nakano-cho, Hachioji City, Tokyo. It was built on a slight elevation on the north bank of the Kawaguchi River, a tributary of the Tama River. In 1966 and 1967, the Nakata Site Research Committee, led by Kono Isamu, conducted an excavation survey of the entire area, covering an area of 30,000 m2, and discovered 112 pit dwelling sites dating from the Jomon to Heian periods. The plan shapes of the dwelling sites vary depending on the era, with circular sites in the Jomon period and roughly square from the Kofun period onwards. Of the dwelling sites whose eras have been identified, two are from the Jomon period, five from the end of the Yayoi period to the beginning of the Kofun period, two from the early Kofun period, one from the middle Kofun period, 59 from the end of the middle Kofun period to late Kofun period, 25 from the Nara period, and 14 from the Heian period.
