A fertile alluvial plain in the lower reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It is located in the central-southern part of the present-day Republic of Iraq. It was the first agricultural region conquered by the Arabs in the 7th century, and was one of the most important grain-producing areas of the empire throughout the Umayyad and Abbasid periods. Its main products are wheat and dates. Currently, its productivity has declined considerably due to salt damage.
