A city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. Population 263,000 (2000). Located across the Rhine, about 30 km west of Düsseldorf, near the border with the Netherlands. One of Germany's largest textile cities. Since the Middle Ages, it has been known for flax cultivation and the linen weaving industry, but in the 18th century the cotton industry was added, and later the silk and rayon industries and the clothing industry. Related machinery industries, iron and metal processing industries, and wholesalers are located here. It is a transportation hub on the left bank of the Rhine, and is also the commercial and educational center of the left bank region. It is home to the secretariats of over 50 economic organizations.
