A city in Sverdlovsk Oblast in central-western Russia. Nadezhdinsk until 1939. It is located about 300 km north of the oblast capital Yekaterinburg, in the eastern foothills of the central Ural Mountains, facing the Kakhba River, a part of the Ob River system. It began as a factory built in the 1890s to make rails for the Trans-Siberian Railway, and developed into the number one steel-producing city in the Urals before the Russian Revolution. It is the center of the northern Ural mining and metallurgical region, and is home to a steelworks that performs integrated steel processing, as well as lumber, food, and other factories. It is connected to Yekaterinburg by rail and highway. Population: 98,044 (2006 estimate).

Serov, Valentin (Aleksandrovich)

Russian painter. His father was a composer. He was a student of Repin and was influenced by French Impressionism. He produced portraits and landscapes with a light and elegant touch, and became a central figure in the art world at the end of the 19th century. His most famous work is "Girl with Peaches" (1877, State Tretyakov Gallery).

ロシア中西部，スベルドロフスク州の都市。1939年までナデジジンスク Nadezhdinsk。州都エカテリンブルグの北約 300km，ウラル山脈中部東麓にあり，オビ川水系カクバ川に臨む。1890年代にシベリア鉄道用のレールをつくるための工場が建設されたことに始まり，ロシア革命前にはウラル地方第1の製鉄都市に発展。ウラル鉱業・冶金地帯北部の中心地で，銑鋼一貫作業を行なう製鉄所が立地し，ほかに製材，食品などの工場がある。エカテリンブルグと鉄道，ハイウェーで連絡。人口 9万8044 (2006推計) 。
