A folk art form. A type of Furyuu dance found in the Saga Prefecture region. In the Hizen region, a folk art form has been handed down in which a group of people wearing gorgeous costumes and masks go on a procession accompanied by music from a large drum, a shimedaiko drum, a large gong, a flute, and a drum. This form is called "Ukitachi." Ukitachi is thought to be a phonetic spelling of "Furyu." Depending on the type of style, there are Taiko Ukitachi, Gong Ukitachi, Mai Ukitachi, and Zeni Taiko Ukitachi, but the Ukitachi in which a group of people wearing demon masks and with drums hanging from their chests take part in the procession is called Men Ukitachi. It is often seen in festivals in the counties of Fujitsu, Kishima, Ogi, and others. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
