Dried grapes. They are said to have been grown in the Middle East since ancient times, but today California is the world's largest producer, with other countries including Australia, Greece, China, and Spain. In the United States, winemaking became illegal after Prohibition came into force, which led to the production of dried grapes. The main ingredients are seedless grapes such as Thomson Seedless and Black Corinth, and seedless Muscat grapes. They can be eaten as is, or added to cakes, cookies, puddings, bread, salads, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
