An extremely sensitive method that uses antibodies or antigens labeled with fluorescent dyes such as fluorescein or rhodamine to detect antigens or antibodies present in body fluids, tissues, etc. Of these, when antibodies are labeled, it is often called the fluorescent antibody method. There are two methods: direct and indirect. In the case of fluorescent antibodies, the direct method involves reacting a fluorescently labeled antibody that specifically binds to an antigen present in the tissue with a thin tissue slice, and when the slice is thoroughly washed and observed under a fluorescent microscope, the fluorescent antibody that has bound to the antigen in the tissue emits fluorescence, revealing the presence of that antigen.
