Pham Van Dong

One of the top leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Born in Gia Binh Province in central Vietnam to a high-ranking government official. After graduating from the prestigious Quoc Hoc School in Hue and receiving a colonial education in France in Hanoi, he traveled to Guangdong in 1925 and joined Ho Chi Minh. He joined the Vietnamese Youth Association of Revolutionary Comrades (the precursor to the Communist Party of Vietnam) founded by Ho, and thereafter devoted himself to the revolutionary movement. After the August Revolution of 1945, he consistently held key positions in the party and government, and within the party, he was elected a member of the Politburo four times in a row, from the 2nd National Congress in February 1951 to the 5th Congress (March 1982), and within the government, he served as Prime Minister from September 1955 until retiring in 1987.

ベトナム共産党最高指導者の一人で，ベトナム社会主義共和国の首相。ベトナム中部のギアビン省に高級官吏の子として生まれる。フエの名門校クオックホクを経て，ハノイでフランス植民地教育を受けたのち，1925年広東に赴きホー･チ･ミンと合流。ホーの設立したベトナム青年革命同志会(ベトナム共産党の前身)に参加し，以来革命運動に挺身する。45年の8月革命後は一貫して党，政府の要職にあり，党内では，51年2月の第2回全国代表大会以来，第5回大会(1982年3月)まで連続4回政治局員に選出され，また政府内でも55年9月以来首相を務め，87年退任。
