Cassette tape - kasutotepu (English spelling)

A cassette is a device that contains a magnetic tape as a recording medium and two reels (also called reels or hubs) for sending and taking up the tape, all in one case. Before the advent of cassette tapes, a system called open reel was used. In this system, the magnetic tape was stored in an exposed reel, and when using the tape, the tape was manually pulled out from the sending reel and attached to the take-up reel via a magnetic head. With the advent of cassette tapes, this troublesome tape attachment process became unnecessary, and a convenient system was created in which preparation for operation was completed simply by inserting the cassette into the tape recorder. This led to the sudden spread of magnetic tape systems, which had previously been used mainly for business purposes, into consumer use. The advantages of cassette tapes are that they are small, easy to handle, and cause little damage or contamination to the tape. On the other hand, the disadvantage is that it is difficult to edit the tape by hand (the editing process of cutting the tape with scissors and splicing it with other tapes or cutting off the unnecessary parts).

In a broad sense, it includes all cassette-type tape media. There are audio and video cassettes, and each of these is available in analog and digital versions. Analog audio cassettes include compact cassettes, microcassettes, and L-cassettes, while digital audio cassettes include DAT (digital audio tape recorder) and DCC (digital compact cassette). Analog video cassettes include VHS, Betamax, and 8mm video, while digital video cassettes include D-VHS. In a narrow sense, it often refers only to compact cassettes. With the advent of disc-shaped media, cassette tapes lost their position as the main recording and recording medium. However, audio and video cassettes have not disappeared, and they continue to be manufactured and supplied, although in small quantities. In other words, for audio, compact cassettes continue to be supplied in the form of decks and tapes, owing to the strong support of some users, especially the elderly, as well as to demand in developing countries, and for video, the supply of DVD/VHS integrated recorder decks and tapes continues (all as of 2014).

記録メディアとしての磁気テープと、テープの送出用・巻き取り用の二つのリール（巻き枠、ハブともいう）などを一つのケースに収めてカセット状にしたものをいう。カセットテープが出現するまでは、オープンリールとよばれる方式が使われていた。これは、磁気テープがむき出しのリールに収められ、使用にあたっては、送出用リールから手作業でテープを引き出し、磁気ヘッドを経由して巻き取り用リールに装着する形式のものであった。カセットテープの出現により、この煩わしいテープ装着作業が不要になり、カセットをテープレコーダーに挿入するだけで動作の準備が完了するという便利な方式になった。これによって、従来業務用が主であった磁気テープシステムが民生用として一気に普及した。カセットテープの利点として、小型で扱いやすく、テープの損傷や汚染が少ないことがあげられる。一方、欠点として、テープの手切り編集（テープを鋏(はさみ)で切断して、他のテープとつなぎ合わせたり不要部分を切り捨てたりする編集作業）が困難なことがあげられる。

　広義には、カセット状のテープメディアすべてが含まれる。オーディオ用とビデオ用があり、またそれぞれにアナログ用とデジタル用がある。アナログオーディオ用のカセットテープには、コンパクトカセット、マイクロカセット、エルカセットなどが、またデジタルオーディオ用のカセットテープにはDAT（デジタルオーディオテープレコーダー）、DCC（デジタルコンパクトカセット）などが商品化された。アナログビデオ用のカセットテープには、VHSやベータマックス、8ミリビデオなどが、デジタルビデオ用にはD-VHSなどが商品化された。狭義には、コンパクトカセットのみをさす場合が多い。ディスク状媒体の出現によって、カセットテープは録音・録画用媒体における主力の座から退いた。しかし、オーディオ用、ビデオ用ともカセットテープが消滅したわけではなく、生産量は少ないながら製造と供給が続けられている。すなわち、オーディオ用では、コンパクトカセットが年配者など一部のユーザーの根強い支持や、開発途上国の需要に支えられて、デッキやテープの供給が続けられ、ビデオ用では、DVD・VHS一体型レコーダーデッキとテープの供給が続いている（いずれも2014年時点）。
