It is an annual plant of the Commelinaceae family (APG classification: Commelinaceae). The lower part of the stem crawls along the ground and produces roots from the nodes. The upper part branches upwards. The leaves are thin lanceolate, 2-7 cm long and 4-8 mm wide, with a short leaf sheath at the base that encases the stem. From August to October, it produces a single flower in each leaf axil. The flower stalk is 2-3 cm long, with three green sepals. There are also three petals, pale pink-purple, about 5 mm long. There are three fertile stamens and three pseudostamens. The ovary has three chambers. The capsule contains several seeds. It grows in wetlands and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, China, Southeast Asia, and North America. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it is commonly said that applying this plant will remove warts.
