A pair of pea-sized accessory reproductive glands located in the urogenital diaphragm below the prostate. The ducts open into the urethra and secrete a weakly alkaline mucus during sexual arousal. They were described by the English anatomist Cowper in 1702. Cooper's glands. Bulbourethral glands.
[Additional information] The bulbourethral glands were reported by the French surgeon Jean-Marie in 1684, prior to Cowper, but are named after Cowper, who drew detailed anatomical diagrams.

前立腺下方の尿生殖隔膜内にあるエンドウ豆大の一対の副生殖腺。導管は尿道に開口し、性的興奮時に弱アルカリ性の粘液を分泌する。1702年に英国の解剖学者カウパーが記載。クーパー腺。尿道球腺。
[補説]尿道球腺は、カウパーに先立ってフランスの外科医ジャン＝メリが1684年に報告しているが、詳細な解剖図を描いたカウパーの名が付けられている。
