〘Noun〙① In renga and haikai, the act of attaching various upper verses (long verses) to the previous verse of a certain lower verse (short verse). There are also cases where a short verse is attached to the previous verse of a long verse. ② A form of zappai. An independent combination of only two verses. A points-scoring competition in which participants attach a verse (usually a long verse in 5-7-5) to a given previous verse (usually a short verse in 7-7). The master who set the verses selected the collected verses and published the verses with the highest scores. It became popular among common people from the Manji era ( 1658-61 ), and later gave rise to various forms such as kamuri-zuke (crown-attached) , kutsuzuki (foot-attached) , and senryu-kyoku.
