Born: November 23, 1821 in Paris [Died] February 13, 1868, Saint-Maurice French printmaker and painter. He joined the French Navy, leaving behind sketches of foreign landscapes and ships during his voyages. He later left the Navy and, due to color blindness, decided to become an etcher. From 1850 to 1854, he produced a series of etchings on the theme of Parisian landscapes, but at the time they were not recognized by anyone other than a few experts, and in despair he was admitted to the Charenton psychiatric hospital in Saint-Maurice in 1858. He was released from the hospital in 1859 and continued the series, but was admitted again in 1867 and committed suicide the following year in 1868. He left behind original works that were romantic and strongly fantasy-like. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
