[Birth] 361. Thermae Himeraeae
[Died] 289 BC. Tyrant (reigned 317-304 BC) and later king (reigned 304-289 BC) of Syracuse, ancient Sicily. He arrived in Syracuse around 343 BC and distinguished himself in the military. In 317 BC, he led an army to overthrow the oligarchy, became a tyrant himself, and fought against the Sicilian Greeks, conquering many cities. In 310 BC, he fought against Carthage and was besieged in Syracuse, but escaped and succeeded in reaching the enemy's base in Africa. He was defeated in 307 BC, but the following year he made peace and confined the Carthaginian forces to western Sicily. In 304 BC, he proclaimed himself king and advanced into southern Italy and the Adriatic Sea, but after his death, the Carthaginian forces in Sicily became powerful again.
