Athenaeus - Athenaios (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek writer active around 200. Born in Naucratis (Egypt). Background unknown. His work " Deipnosophistai " (Symposium of the Doctors) (currently extant in 15 volumes) is the oldest "culinary encyclopedia" that has been handed down to this day. It is structured around a three-day banquet where literary scholars, poets, singers, musicians, philosophers, doctors, government officials, and lawyers discuss all sorts of topics, and contains a wealth of information on cooking methods from all over the world, extravagant gourmet tastes, wine, fruit, furniture, tableware, music, dance, and magic that are common at banquets. As a literary work in the "symposium" format, it cannot compare to the works of Plato and Xenophon, but it is an unrivaled resource in terms of conveying the daily life of ancient Greece and Rome. This book also contains over 1,000 quotations from plays that have been lost and are no longer available to us, making it the greatest source of information on ancient Greek middle comedy and new comedy, and therefore extremely valuable in literary history.

生没年不詳。200年ごろ活躍した古代ギリシアの文人。ナウクラティス（エジプト）出身。経歴は不明。その著『博士の饗宴(きょうえん)』Deipnosophistai（15巻の体裁で現存）は今日まで伝わる最古の「料理大全」とよぶべきもの。文学研究家、詩人、歌手、演奏家、哲学者、医師、役人、法律家などが3日間にわたる大宴会の席で談論風発、ありとあらゆる話題を提供するという枠構造のなかに、世界各地の料理法、贅(ぜい)を尽くした美食趣味、酒、果実、家具食器、宴席につきものの歌舞音曲、手品などについてのおびただしい情報が盛り込まれている。「饗宴(シュムポシオン)」形式の文学作品としてみればプラトンやクセノフォンのその名の作には及ぶべくもないが、古代ギリシア・ローマの日常生活を伝えてくれる点では無二の資料である。またこの書は、失われてしまっていまに伝わらない劇を1000以上も引用してくれているので、古代ギリシアの中期喜劇、新喜劇についての最大の情報源として文学史的価値はきわめて高い。
