〘Noun〙 Buddhist term. ① (translation of dharma-uddāna, dharma-mudrā) A sign that distinguishes Buddhism from heretics, a sign of truth that the Buddhist teachings are true and unchanging. In Hinayana Buddhism, it is called the three seals of impermanence of all things, nonexistence of the self in all things, and tranquility of nirvana, while in Mahayana Buddhism, it is called the one seal of the one true nature seal. ※Shobogenzo (1231-53) Buddhism: "I now teach you that the supreme and wonderful paths of all Buddhas, Shobogenzo, and the Dharma seals of all Buddhas are." ② Abbreviation of "Hoin Daiosho-i (the rank of Dharma seal great priest)." ※Tohokuin Kuyoki (1030) "Eien may be given the rank of two Dharma seals ." ③ A title given to Confucian scholars, Buddhist sculptors, doctors, renga poets, painters, etc. since the Middle Ages, similar to the titles of monks. ※Tamon-in Diary - Tensho 17 (1589) November 1st "Recently, six doctors from Kyoto have been appointed as Hoin" ④ Yamabushi (mountain priest) ③ Another name. ※Kanazoshi, Usou-shi (1632) Vol. 1 "A white, silky twill kosode (abbreviated) with a twilled kosode (short sleeves) and a Hoin (short skirt) with a twilled hem."
