It is an evergreen small shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It is also called rock haze. It grows to a height of 10-30 cm, with well-branched branches densely covered with long, spreading reddish-brown hairs. The leaves are alternate, ovate, 1-3 cm long, leathery and glossy, with sparse bristles on the underside and fine serrated edges. Around June, a long stalk densely covered with reddish-brown hairs appears from the upper axil of the branch, and at the end of the stalk a single bell-shaped white flower 6-7 mm long opens downward. The tip of the corolla is shallowly divided into five lobes, curved back, and tinged with pale pink. The calyx is divided into five lobes, covered with reddish-brown hairs, and has 10 stamens. After flowering, the calyx swells and becomes fleshy, enveloping the capsule and becoming a berry-like pseudocarp that faces upward. They ripen red between August and October, are sweet and edible. It grows in grasslands on low or high mountains, and is widely distributed on the Japan Sea side of Hokkaido and Honshu, and can also be found near the Besshi Copper Mine in Shikoku. It is often grown in pots for decoration. The Japanese name Akamono is thought to be a corrupted version of Akamomo, which resembles a red peach because the pseudofruit resembles a red peach. [Yoshio Kobayashi April 16, 2021] The leaves are leathery and shiny, with fine sawtooth edges. Bell-shaped white flowers bloom downwards around June.
