Born: April 3, 1898 in Ixelles [Died] April 1, 1962. Brussels. Belgian playwright and novelist. He wrote mainly in French. His plays revolve around the struggle between good and evil, God and the Devil, and combine wild intensity with medieval mysticism. Behind the cheerful comedy that may seem crude, he highlights the essential tragedy of human existence. He traced back to the origins of theater while also using modern techniques, and contributed to the development of contemporary theater. His works include Christophe Colomb (1927), Escurial (1928), Fastes d'enfer (1929), Magie rouge (1934), and Hop Signor! (1935).
