A city in the eastern part of the island of New Guinea, Papua New Guinea. Located at the head of Huon Bay. Capital of Morobe District (area 34,500 km2 , population 363,535 (1990)). Gateway and port for import and export of goods to and from the Highlands via the Highlands National Highway. Before World War II, the capital of New Guinea (Mandate Territory) was moved from Rabaul, which had been damaged by a volcanic eruption, to Lae. In addition to an airport and a harbor, various light industries, including lumber and plywood, have developed. Lumber, coffee, etc. are shipped from the port. パプアニューギニア,ニューギニア島東部の都市。ヒュオン湾奥に位置する。モロベ県 (面積3万 4500km2。人口 36万 3535〈1990〉) の県都。ハイランド国道を通じてのハイランド地方の物資の出入口,輸出入港。第2次世界大戦前,火山噴火の被害を受けたラバウルから当時のニューギニア (委任統治領) の首都がラエへ移ったことがある。空港,港湾があるほか,製材,合板をはじめ各種軽工業が発達。港からは木材,コーヒーなどを積出す。ラエ工科大学がある。人口8万 655 (1990) 。
