A thin image display device that uses plasma discharge. Images are displayed by applying voltage to rare gases such as neon sealed between two glass plates, which emit ultraviolet light and cause phosphors to emit light. It has high contrast, fast response speed, and wide viewing angle. It is easier to enlarge than LCD displays, so it is used in large-screen TVs. ◇It is also called "PDP," an abbreviation of "plasma display panel." It is also called a "PDP monitor."

プラズマの放電を利用した薄型の画像表示装置。2枚のガラス板の間に封入したネオンなどの希ガスに電圧をかけて紫外線を放出し、蛍光体を発光させることで画像表示を行う。コントラストが高く、応答速度が速く、視野角が広いという特徴を持つ。液晶ディスプレーに比べて大型化が容易なため、大画面のテレビなどに用いられる。◇「plasma display panel」の頭文字から「PDP」ともいう。また、「PDPモニター」ともいう。
