1870‐1947 King of Denmark (1912-47) and, following the establishment of the personal union, King of Iceland (1918-44). In 1920, he caused the Easter Crisis by forcing the cabinet to resign in support of the Flensborg Movement following a referendum on the ownership of the northern province of Schleswig. This was the last time in Danish history that a king exercised political power. During World War II, under the German occupation, his firm stance, such as refusing to appoint the Scavenius cabinet, solidified his credibility among the people.
