Antipathes japonica (sea pine)

Antipathes japonica (sea pine)
A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Hylocercidae in the class Anthozoa (illustration). It is also known by other names such as Horn coral, Black coral, and Mayoke coral. The names Horn coral and Black coral come from the hard, black bony shaft, and Mayoke coral comes from the fact that amulets made from the bony shaft were used as talismans to ward off evil in Europe long ago. It is widely distributed from central Honshu southward, and grows on rocky reefs at depths of 10m or more. It forms tree-like colonies that are usually around 50cm tall, but can sometimes reach heights of 2-3m. It forms colonies by sending out numerous feather-like branches that spread out in a single plane diagonally upward from a single trunk.
