1818‐83 Russian author. Born into a poor noble family, he became a middle school teacher after graduating from Kazan University, but his knowledge of folklore, particularly of the Separatists from the Russian Orthodox Church, led to his appointment as an official in Nizhny Novgorod Governorate and then the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he was responsible for administering the affairs of the Separatists. From the 1850s onwards, he published works set in the Volga River basin under the pen name Andrei Pecherskii, but his most famous works are the two-part series In the Woods (1871-74) and On the Mountains (1875-81), which he wrote in his later years.
