Located in Kugahara 4-6-chome, Ota-ku, Tokyo, this is the remains of a late Yayoi period settlement located on a plateau about 19m above sea level on the left bank of the downstream Tama River. During road construction work associated with land readjustment that began in 1927, large and small pit dwellings were discovered in the cuts, and many pottery fragments were also excavated, drawing attention to the site. Some of the pit dwellings were destroyed in fires. Excavations were conducted on part of the settlement in 1947-48. In 1939, a detailed classification of the pottery excavated from this site led to the idea that it could be divided into two periods, an earlier period and an later period, and it was unified into the names of the older period being Kugahara style and the newer period being Yayoi-cho style.
