…The period of the Catholic Monarchs (Isabella I and Ferdinand II) (late 15th-early 16th century) is famous for the collection of secular songs called the Royal Songs, which contain about 460 pieces for three or four voices, often with a Spanish flavor. The most important song composer of this period was Juan del Encina (1468?-1529), who was also the founder of Spanish drama. A religious school was also formed in this period by Juan de Anchieta (c. 1461-1523) and several other composers, but the true flowering of this tradition was in the first half of the 16th century by Cristóbal de Morales (1500?-53), who was also famous in Rome. …
