Mellitic Acid - Melitosan

benzenehexacarboxylic acid. C ₁₂ H ₆ O ₁₂ (342.17). It is obtained by oxidizing charcoal or graphite with nitric acid, or by oxidizing hexamethylbenzene. Crystal. Decomposition point 286-288 °C. Easily soluble in water and ethanol. When dehydrated with acetyl chloride, it produces mellitic anhydride. When distilled, it decomposes with decarbonation to pyromellitic anhydride, and when heated with calcium carbonate, it decomposes to trimesic acid. Beeswax is the aluminum salt of mellitic acid, Al ₂ C ₁₂ O ₁₂ ･18H ₂ O. [CAS 517-60-2]

benzenehexacarboxylic acid．C₁₂H₆O₁₂(342.17)．木炭や黒鉛を硝酸酸化するか，またはヘキサメチルベンゼンを酸化するなどの方法で得られる．結晶．分解点286～288 ℃．水，エタノールに易溶．塩化アセチルなどで脱水すると無水メリト酸を生じる．蒸留すると脱炭酸を伴い無水ピロメリト酸に，炭酸カルシウムと加熱するとトリメシン酸に分解する．みつろう石はメリト酸のアルミニウム塩Al₂C₁₂O₁₂･18H₂Oである．[CAS 517-60-2]
