benzenehexacarboxylic acid. C 12 H 6 O 12 (342.17). It is obtained by oxidizing charcoal or graphite with nitric acid, or by oxidizing hexamethylbenzene. Crystal. Decomposition point 286-288 °C. Easily soluble in water and ethanol. When dehydrated with acetyl chloride, it produces mellitic anhydride. When distilled, it decomposes with decarbonation to pyromellitic anhydride, and when heated with calcium carbonate, it decomposes to trimesic acid. Beeswax is the aluminum salt of mellitic acid, Al 2 C 12 O 12 ・18H 2 O.
