[Eye development]
The development of the eye is common to all lineages of vertebrates. Among the components of the eye, the retina, optic nerve, pigment epithelium, ciliary body, and iris epithelium are formed from the optic vesicle, which is part of the central nervous system. The lens, corneal epithelium, and conjunctival epithelium are derived from the ectodermal epidermis, while the stroma and endothelium of the cornea, sclera, choroid, ciliary body, and parts other than the epithelium of the iris are derived from mesodermal mesenchyme.
