A Malay ethnic group based in the Ilocos region in the northwest of Luzon, Philippines. At the beginning of Spanish rule, they mostly lived in the Ilocos region, but now they have spread to the Cagayan River basin in the east and the hinterland of Lingayen Gulf in the south, with many migrating to Mindanao and Hawaii. Ilocano belongs to the Austronesian language family, but the speaker population is estimated to be about 5 million. Their main occupation is upland rice cultivation, and they also grow various vegetables and raise pigs, chickens, and goats. Their main source of cash income is tobacco, but they generally earn cash from handicrafts and wage labor during the dry season. Many live in farming villages called barrios and are Catholics.
