1544‐1603 A religious leader in medieval India. Born into a Brahmin family in Ahmedabad, he spent most of his life in Rajasthan, and died in Narain in the same region. He wrote a large collection of religious poems called Bānī (Poetic Verses) and became the founder of the Dadu sect. The core of this sect was ascetics, supported by lay followers called sevaks (slaves). They had bases in Jaipur and Narain in Rajasthan, and extended their influence into the Punjab region as well.
