… [Editorial Department]
[From the Ottoman Empire to the birth of modern Greece]
There is a long history of debate about the origins of today's Greeks. In the 18th century, Western intellectuals (such as C.H. Pucqueville) who were steeped in pro-Hellenistic ideas and visited Greece, were amazed to find traces of ancient Greeks in the people they met in places associated with "classical antiquity." In the mid-19th century, however, German Byzantine scholar Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer (1790-1861) sparked a debate by proposing the theory that modern Greeks are descendants of Slavs. Although Fallmerayer's theory has been refuted by subsequent research, the period of the formation of modern Greeks remains a topic of debate (some scholars have recognized modern Greek elements in Greek dialects from the 7th and 8th centuries).
