Oki
Gekoku (a type of province ranking under the Ritsuryo system) is an archipelago located in the Sea of ​​Japan in the northeastern part of Shimane Prefecture. Its capital is Saigo-cho, Shukichi-gun. It is made up of four islands, Dozen (three islands) and Dogo, and is divided into four districts. Since ancient times, it has been a place of exile for criminals, and Emperor Go-Toba was exiled there during the Jokyu War, and Emperor Godaigo was exiled there during the Genko Incident. During the Kamakura period, the Sasaki clan of Omi served as the guardian of Izumo and Oki, and after the Northern and Southern Courts period, it was ruled by the Yamana clan, Kyogoku clan, Amago clan, and Yoshikawa clan, and during the Edo period, it became a fief of the Matsudaira clan of Matsue.

山陰道に属する下国 (げこく) (令制での国の等級の一種)。国府は周吉 (すき) 郡西郷町。島前 (どうぜん) (3島),島後 (どうご) の4島からなり,4郡に分かれる。古代から罪人遠流 (おんる) の地とされ,承久の乱で後鳥羽上皇,元弘の変で後醍醐 (ごだいご) 天皇が配流。鎌倉時代には近江の佐々木氏一族が出雲と隠岐の守護を兼ね,南北朝以後山名氏・京極氏・尼子氏・吉川氏などの支配を経て,江戸時代松江の松平氏の預り領となった。
