A kingdom formed in 1707 by the union of England and Wales with Scotland. Since 1603, the two countries had been ruled by the same monarch, but with this union the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh was abolished and Scotland sent 16 members of the House of Lords and 45 members of the House of Commons to the Parliament in Westminster, London.
