It is the name of the devil who appears in the German legend of Faust, and is called Mephostophiles in the Faustbuch, published in 1587. In his play Faust, Goethe delves literary into the popular medieval image of Mephistopheles, who makes a pact with Faust to fulfill Faust's desires with magical powers in exchange for his soul, and ultimately destroys him, giving him a more human, worldly, tactful, and cynical character.
