This was the Edo Shogunate's library, located at the foot of a hill called Momijiyama, in the center of Edo Castle. It was also called the Fuzan Bunko. Based on Tokugawa Ieyasu's book collection, successive Shoguns made an effort to collect books, and with the Shogunate's authority, many valuable ancient Japanese and Chinese books, including Chinese books imported from Nagasaki, were collected. The books were managed by Bugyo (magistrate of books) and doshin (police officers) such as Aoki Konyo and Kondo Morishige (Juzo), and were made available to the Shogun and scholars among the Shogunate's retainers. When the library was abolished in 1866 (Keio 2), it contained approximately 110,000 books. Most of them are currently kept at the National Archives of Japan, and some are kept in the Imperial Household Agency's Archives and Mausolea Department.
