Among newts, the genus Tylototriton , found in the Ryukyu Islands and East Asia, and the genus Pleurodeles , found in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, are primitive species, the latter being large and reaching a total length of 30 cm. The genus Salamandra is also slightly larger, with the spotted salamandra S. salamandra (total length 18-24 cm), found in central and southern Europe, known as the fire salamander because of its beautiful markings, and the alpine salamandra S. atra (total length 16 cm), found in the highlands of the Alps, never entering water after metamorphosis. They are ovoviviparous, and females give birth to fully developed larvae simply by placing their tails in water, but they will drown if they accidentally fall into the water. ...
