Born: February 9, 1814, New Lebanon, New York
[Died] August 4, 1886, Greystone, New York. American lawyer and politician. He practiced law in New York City from 1841. In 1846, he was elected to the New York State Assembly. He supported the Union during the Civil War, and made a name for himself by reorganizing the Democratic Party after the war and exposing corruption among the Tweed faction. He was elected Governor of New York in 1874. He was nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate in the 1876 presidential election, and his victory seemed certain. However, he had a dispute with Republican R. Hayes over the number of votes, and in 1877, he withdrew from the election after reaching the Hayes-Tilden Compromise, which included a backroom deal to withdraw federal troops from the South.
