Methylene blue - methylene blue

Methylene blue - methylene blue

A basic dye with a thiazine skeleton, it is a beautiful blue dye that was synthesized by H. Caro of Germany in 1876. It can be synthesized from 4-aminodimethylaniline and sodium thiosulfate, or by dimethylamination of phenothiazine. It appears as a dark greenish blue crystal or powder. It dissolves well in water and ethanol (ethyl alcohol). It can be used to dye silk and wool in a neutral bath. Cotton can also be dyed with tannin mordant. However, it is sensitive to sunlight and has little practical value as a dye. It becomes colorless leucomethylene blue when reduced, but reversibly returns to methylene blue when oxidized. For this reason, it is used as an oxidation-reduction indicator. It is also used in medicine as a disinfectant, in functional testing agents, and as a biological stain.
