Çatal Hüyük (English spelling)

A prehistoric site located 40km southeast of Koniya in south-central Turkey, at an altitude of 900m. Excavated by J. Mellato in 1961-63, 65. Dated by carbon-14 to the late 7th to early 6th millennium BC, it is the largest city in Western Asia, belonging to the Neolithic period, and a monumental site that revolutionized the common sense of Neolithic agricultural villages. It consists of two tells, one on the east and one on the west, with the eastern one being the larger, measuring 600m x 300m and 17.5m high. Excavation of about one-third of the total area was carried out up to layer XII, but was stopped before reaching the natural layer.

トルコ中央南部コニヤの南東約40km，標高900mの地点にある先史遺跡。J.メラートが1961‐63,65年に発掘した。炭素14法によって前7千年紀後半から前6千年紀前半に年代づけられた，新石器時代に属する西アジア最大の都市の規模をもち，新石器時代における農耕村落の常識を大きく変革した記念すべき遺跡である。　東西二つのテルからなり，東が大きく600m×300m，高さ17.5mのテルで，全体の約30分の1の広さを，第XII層まで発掘したが，自然層に達しないままで中断されている。
