A city in northern Egypt, south of Cairo. Also called Ḥulwān. Population 328,000 (1991). Long known for its mineral springs, the remains of a Pharaonic settlement and Roman baths have been excavated here. In 690, Abd al-Aziz, son of the Umayyad Caliph Marwan II, purchased the land and built a palace and gardens, where gold coins were once minted. The town eventually fell into decline, but in the late 19th century, Ismail Pasha built a palace here and revived the town, which developed into a residential area on the outskirts of the capital.
