Horse Hill - Umayasaka

Japanese: 厩坂 - うまやさか

A place name that appears in the Nihon Shoki. It is thought to be in the area of Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. The October entry in the same book, the third year of Emperor Ojin's reign, indicates that the Emishi from the east were used to build a stable road. The August entry in the same book, the 15th year, states that the king of Baekje ordered Achi to raise two good horses in a stable at Karusakanoue, which is presumably near the current Ogaru Town. According to the same book, there was a Umayasaka Palace during the reign of Emperor Jomei. The predecessor of Nara's Kofuku-ji Temple was called Umayasaka-dera Temple, and there is a theory that the temple site was in the small village of Joroku, north of Ogaru Town, on the border between the current Kume Town and Ishikawa Town.

《日本書紀》にみえる地名。奈良県橿原(かしはら)市域と考えられる。同書応神天皇３年10月条に東の蝦夷(えみし)を使って厩坂道を造ったとみえる。同15年８月条によると，百済(くだら)王の遣わした阿直岐(あちき)に命じて軽坂上(かるのさかのうえ)の厩で良馬２匹を飼育させたといい，現大軽(おおがる)町付近と推定される。同書によると舒明天皇の時代に厩坂宮があった。奈良興福寺の前身は厩坂寺と呼ばれ，大軽町の北，現久米町と石川町の境の小字丈六(じょうろく)を寺跡とする説がある。
