An insect belonging to the order Hemiptera, suborder Homoptera, family Cicadidae. It is classified into the subfamily Chichi-Cicada, because the male lacks the dorsal valve of the sound organ. It lives on coniferous trees such as red pine, and appears in August and September. Its call is a monotonous chichi-chi... and similar to that of a type of morning cricket. It is endemic to Japan, and is found from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu. The closely related species, C. yezoensis , lives in Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands, and has a large, somewhat rounded body, about 25 mm long. It has the habit of flying while singing.
