Nefertiti - Nefertiti (English spelling)

Nefertiti - Nefertiti (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Queen of Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV), the 10th king of the 18th dynasty of ancient Egypt. Her name means "Beauty has come." She was related to the king by blood (probably cousin). When the king preached the new religion of Aten when he ascended to the throne, she became the first fervent believer. Her beauty played a role in spreading the new religion. She gave birth to six princesses with the king. The second princess, Maketaton, died young, the first princess, Meritaton, became the wife of King Semenkhkara, and the third princess, Ankhesenpatun, married Tutankhatun (later Tutankhamun). Nefertiti, an ardent believer in Aten, opposed the king's attempt to reconcile with Thebes in his later years, and was therefore deposed from her position as queen, spending her days in solitude practicing her faith in the palace north of Amarna. It seems that she outlived the king. A painted bust of her in the Egyptian Museum in Berlin is a renowned representation of her beauty.
