French painter and printmaker. He began printmaking on his own in 1839, and from 1849 onwards, while wandering around southwestern France, Paris and Canada, produced around 60 etched copperplate and lithograph prints. His works, while crudely drawn, are constructed as microcosms seen through the eyes of a visionary. An extraordinary obsession with detail and a passion for the dark chaos created by tree branches, undergrowth, small animals and swamps run through all his work, giving it strength. His art was generally ignored, but his romantic themes of death, dreams and despair won him the support of Baudelaire, Hugo and others.

フランスの画家，版画家。1839年から独学で版画を始め，49年以降，南西フランス，パリ，カナダと放浪するうちに約60点の腐食銅版画，石版画を制作。彼の作品には，稚拙なデッサンながら，幻視者の眼による微小宇宙が構築されている。異常なまでの細部への執着，樹木の枝葉と下草と小動物と沼がつくる暗い混沌への情熱が全作品を貫き，力を付与している。彼の芸術は一般には無視されたが，そのロマン派的な，死と夢と絶望の主題により，ボードレール，ユゴーなどに支持された。
