1822‐85 French painter and printmaker. He began printmaking on his own in 1839, and from 1849 onwards, while wandering around southwestern France, Paris and Canada, produced around 60 etched copperplate and lithograph prints. His works, while crudely drawn, are constructed as microcosms seen through the eyes of a visionary. An extraordinary obsession with detail and a passion for the dark chaos created by tree branches, undergrowth, small animals and swamps run through all his work, giving it strength. His art was generally ignored, but his romantic themes of death, dreams and despair won him the support of Baudelaire, Hugo and others. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
