The border between the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia in the United States. During the colonial period, there was a continuous border dispute between the Penn family, the lord of Pennsylvania, and the Baltimore family, the lord of Maryland. The border was established in 1763-68 by British surveyors C. Mason and J. Dixon (total length: 375 km), and in 1784 it was extended to western Virginia (present-day West Virginia). It was later used in the Missouri Compromise as the border between slave states and free states, and is still generally considered to be the line that separates the North and South.
