…He first joined the War Department, and was recognized by the Prime Minister Mazarin, and was appointed as the Superintendent of Finances by assisting him. He clashed with the Minister of Finance Fouquet, and accused him of embezzlement of public funds. He reported to King Louis XIV and brought him down (1661). He gained the King's trust and was appointed as the Contrôleur Général des Finances, and together with Le Tellier and Hugues de Lionne, he formed a triumvirate. He later became the Minister of State in charge of the Navy and the Imperial Court, and also served as the Commissioner of Architecture. He wielded enormous power in a wide range of fields, and supported the achievements of Louis XIV as the de facto Prime Minister. …
